Tom was a 67 year-old retiree who at first enjoyed his new found freedom but Tom soon became bored. And he missed being around people. And a sense of purpose. And golf ($$$$). So Tom decided to start his second career. Adults over 50 are living longer and wanting to work well into their golden years, therefore starting what is called a ‘’second career”. Many companies are seeking older workers who are qualified, experienced, reliable and hard working. A Center for Retirement Research at Boston College study identified jobs where employers are particularly likely to hire workers ages 50 and older. If you are searching for a full-time or part-time job these five professions may peak your interest.

Sales demonstrators. Who doesn’t love a free sample? So imagine being the one giving the free samples! The average hourly pay for demonstrators is $11 per hour, but will vary by experience and location. Experienced demonstrators who sell high-priced products can expect to earn up to $20 per hour.

Couriers and Messengers. When you think of couriers or messengers the image of a young, fearless 20 something weaving in and out of traffic on his/her bike through rush hour traffic with documents slung to their backs might come to mind. When in actuality messengers and couriers can travel by foot! By car! By bus! By you! The average hourly pay for a Courier/Messenger is $13 per hour.

Rideshare Drivers. With the popularity of ride sharing, working for a company such as Lyft or Uber might be a great way for you to make money, meet new people and be your own boss. The average annual salary for a rideshare driver is $20,000-$30,000.

Guides. Love to be around people and learn/share new things? Then being a guide might be your second career. Guides escort people through interesting places, such as museums, art galleries and historic sites while providing detailed information. The average hourly pay for a guide is $11 per hour.

School crossing guards. Crossing guards are undercover superheroes and everyone’s best friend. Whether it’s a high-five from Susie or homemade cookies from Billy, crossing guards get paid in more ways than one. The average hourly salary for school crossing guards is $10 an hour.
